Links LOCAL WILDLIFE PHOTOS This page contains a selection of my most recent wildlife photographs, mostly taken in the local area around Emsworth, Hampshire, in the south of England, which is where I live. They are arranged in reverse chronological order, with the most recent ones at the top. All photos have been compressed and reduced in size to less than 80kb to make them suitable for downloading. I make no claims as a photographer, I am basically an opportunistic snapper. I take my cameras around with me and the photos are mainly a visual record of my wildlife observations. If I get a good photo then that is a bonus. Wildlife photo archive (an external link) Equipment Most of my non-digiscoped photos were taken with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ5 (12x zoom) which I got 2nd hand on Ebay. This camera has the advantage of being fairly light to carry, despite having a good zoom lens and anti-shake technology. A tip for anyone using this camera is make sure the Picture Adjustment is set at 'Vivid'. I spent over a year with the camera set on 'Natural' or 'Standard' with disappointing 'washed-out' looking images. With the setting on 'Vivid' (from April 2007) the images improved greatly. Digiscoped photos were taken with a Fujifilm Finepix M603. The nice thing about this camera is that the lens fits neatly into the eyepiece of my scope. The camera is also very good for taking video clips. Previously I used a Nikon Coolpix 775 for digiscoping. My scope is a Kowa TSN 601 with angled eyepiece with 20-40x zoom. When digiscoping, I usually have the eyepiece zoom on 40x and the camera on no zoom as this cuts down on vignetting. My technique is simple: I hold the camera up to the eyepiece of my telescope, find the targets on the monitor, click and hope for the best. I have tried attachments, but I found them terribly fiddly, they take up time and interfere with natural birdwatching. I suppose if you have ambitions to take super photos then they are needed.
